New Book for Pastors' Wives PDF Print E-mail
Written by Donna Bordelon Alder

As a scientist, teacher, author and pastor’s daughter, wife and mother, Donna Alder has studied the lives of ministry wives through a personally developed survey distributed throughout the US.  From the 430 responses to this survey come the advice and counsel found in When the Pastor Is Your Husband. In addition, her review of relevant literature has distilled the responses of ministry wives in

six other surveys to reflect the opinions of over 7,000 women from many denominations, many areas of the United States and of diverse ages.  She delivers a well researched, well illustrated book on the joys, the challenges, the success strategies of these women.  She combines relevant, sometimes technical but always readable, background information, advice mined from the experiences of thousands, illustrating life stories and encouragement in an effort to come alongside those considering, those anticipating and those engaged in life as ministry wives.

She includes chapters on each of the top three most often expressed challenges of this role: expectations from one’s self and from others, loneliness and a husband’s relentless schedule.   In addition to these topics, there are chapters on other frequently expressed challenges including the importance of and practical methods for developing spiritual reserves, managing feelings, developing one’s gifts and caring for oneself.   This book looks at the principles important in maintaining a positive attitude toward life and ministry. All of these discussions arise from the responses of women who are experiencing life in ministry and reflect extensive research on the subject.

The concluding two chapters address the subject of depression which surfaces in 22% of her respondents.  There is a chapter on its description, causes and treatments: what works and what doesn’t work - all from the perspective of pastors’ wives.  The final chapter relays the story of three ministry wives whose experiences are meant to encourage and bring great hope to any women who are in the throes of this darkness.

The strengths of this book lie in its ability to successfully capture the actual experiences and advice of these thousands of women, in its relevant life stories, its down-to-earth readable nature and its tender encouragement sprinkled along the path enlightened by each chapter.
