When You Pass Through the Waters PDF Print E-mail
Written by Louann

Isaiah 43

 1 But now, this is what the LORD says—
   he who created you, Jacob,
   he who formed you, Israel:
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;
   I have summoned you by name; you are mine.
2 When you pass through the waters,
   I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
   they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
   you will not be burned;
   the flames will not set you ablaze.
3 For I am the LORD your God,
   the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;

I can tell you about sweeping waters.  Our family went to the Wisconsin Dells for a long weekend.  It was a fabulous place.  I love water parks, but because I am so fair-skinned I can’t spend a lot of time at water parks.  But this place has, brace yourselves, indoor water parks.  Really!!  It’s unbelievable.  I had always thought that would be a great idea, but didn’t think it was possible.  Yet here it was.  They were unveiling a new ride, the Vortex.  Now, it really didn’t look so bad.  A large funnel, and they push you and you ride down it.  I was game.

My first reservation came as we loaded in our raft.  The attendant says, “We need to balance the weight.”  Oh my!  I am rather petite, under five feet, and my husband is a former football player.  There is no balancing of the weight.  I felt a little knot in my stomach. But I was still game.  Then the guy looked me in the eye and ladies, this must have been a word straight from the Lord, because it was the only thing that saved me.  He said, “Whatever happens, don’t let go!”  And then he pushed us in to the darkness.

Well, ladies, you don’t just go down the funnel, you swing from side to side like a pendulum.  It was terrifying!  And each time we swung up, my husband was towering over me threatening to flatten me like a pancake.  When my side went up, I was practically suspended in the air.  My first thought was, “I’m getting out of here” and I began to look for a way out.  Ladies, I actually rose up out of that raft, but I was still holding on.  The attendant’s words were playing in my head, “Whatever happens, don’t let go!”  Then I started literally and verbally calling on the name of Jesus.  “Jesus, help us.  Keep us safe.”  I could hear my husband and son saying, “Breathe, Mom!”

We landed safely and my son said to me, “Mom, I was watching you and I was going to do whatever you did.”  Wow!   I will never forget those words.  He was watching me.  Watching how I handled fear and adversity.  He was going to follow my example.

I thought of the attendant and how his words were what kept me steady.  We need to be in the Word.  In times of adversity, God’s Word, ringing in our hearts and minds, will keep us.

Brianna, my daughter, said, “Mom, Jesus saved you. Let’s ride it again.”  I said “Yes, He did and the Bible says not to tempt the Lord, your God.  We will not be riding that again.”
