Menopause and the Ministry PDF Print E-mail
Written by O.E. Dement, MD.

When life is in balance and you feel great, things around you usually appear rosy and straight forward. If, however, you have lost your energy, you are stressed to the max, your life is pulled in multiple directions, your sex life is non existent, your sleep is restless and tormented with hot flashes, and you have difficulty making even simple decisions that previously came easily, you might be experiencing perimenopause or even true menopause. Some or most of these symptoms are experienced by the majority of women between 45 and 55 years of age. Approximately 50 per cent of women go through these phases of life with mild to moderate effect on their daily life. Another 25 per cent will have only minor symptoms and about 25 per cent will have symptoms that greatly interrupt their life and sometimes the life of those around them.

Many women manage these problems on their own and seek little council other than family members and friends. As a gynecologist, I can assure you there are many that would have suffered less and passed through this time more peacefully had they approached their doctor or practitioner with their concerns. Home remedies and so called natural herbs and phytoestrogens may help mild symptoms but I am a firm believer that many benefit more from HRT (hormone replacement therapy) or SSRIs (antidepressant therapy) and counseling from their physician. I sometimes joke that much of my practice consists of prescribing vitamin P; that is Premarin or other estrogen, Prozac or other SSRI, or Psychological counseling.

Women in the parsonage or any other profession or vocation need to recognize these are naturally occurring events in the life of a woman. God expects us to use all the avenues available to us to cope with them. Menopause symptoms are experienced to different degrees by every woman but the cause is the same. The three hormones sustaining natural balance begin to get out of kilter when the ovaries start to atrophy or quit functioning. The average age is 48-51 but it can occur anytime between 40 and 57.

It is important to treat yourself well by maintaining a well balanced diet, adequate exercise, plenty of rest, self time, medical checkups, appropriate supplements, counseling, and when appropriate hormone replacement therapy.

For more information on specific issues, keep your eyes on our web site, ACOG (the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecologists).
